The setting up of Haulotte in Cantabria may imply the definitive boost that Mecánica Industrial Buelna needs in its plans, which were introduced a few years ago, to diversify its customer portfolio and to form a powerful industrial group.

Mecánica Industrial Buelna was founded in 1971 by Constantino Alonso, an employee from Nueva Montaña Quijano who took advantage of the outsourcing of processes the said company required and established a machining workshop. Since then, activity at the San Felices plant has been linked to large companies established in the valley. Trefilerías Quijano, Mecobusa and Fundimotor (the Nissan plants) or Robert Bosch Sistemas de Frenado have been its main customers and not only for machined parts, as MIB has also created a group of companies that cater for activities that go from industrial cleaning and forklift services to the manufacture of moulds and the fettling of cast parts.

This service portfolio has enabled the company to access new markets in other parts of Spain. MIB has also served foreign companies, such as Bombardier or Alsthom in the railway sector, Delphi in car-making and ABB in capital assets. The company also machines parts for Schindler lifts.

This growth has given rise to the opening of a new machine-welding plant in Zaragoza which, by the end of the year, will employ 60 workers and, the company hopes, provide access to a highly dynamic industrial field that it has embarked on thanks to the encouragement of some of its customers. This plant will serve as a test bed for Haulotte for the manufacture of chassis at the Reocín factory.

As part of its growth strategy, the managers of Mecánica Industrial Buelna do not reject the possibility of entering the plastic injection sector, with the possible take over of another company located in Zaragoza.

With this diversification effort, MIB has managed to increase its customer portfolio to the point that the Nissan plants at Los Corrales, which have historically been the company's main customer, hardly represent 12% of its turnover today. However, obtaining the Haulotte contract for the large elevating platform plant in Reocín would become a milestone in the development of the group. With these new activities and added value, turnover would increase from the 24 million euros of last year to 90 million in 2009.

Haulotte needs chassis to manufacture its personal elevating platforms and its intention is to have them made in Reocín. Over recent weeks, the company has contacted Cantabrian firms, and Mecánica Industrial Buelna seems to be displaying the greatest level of interest in the project. On the other hand, Haulotte is also negotiating with chassis suppliers in France to build a factory in Reocín that would employ one hundred people. Precisely, yesterday, the Cantabrian Prime Minister, Miguel Angel Revilla, accompanied by the head of the Department of Industry, Miguel Ángel Pesquera, received representatives from the service company, Mecánica Industrial Buelna (MIB), to study the possibility of creating a new machine-welding company in the Reocín Industrial Park, aimed at manufacturing components for the Haulotte Group.

Mecánica Industrial Buelna, located in San Felices de Buelna, is a company that has been operating in the metal-machining sector for over 30 years.

Haulotte has been contacting Cantabrian companies for some time to obtain supplies for its chassis and to be able to commence production towards the beginning of 2007. The group, whose Deputy General Manager is Segundo Fernández and which is dedicated to the manufacture of personal and multi-purpose elevating platforms (multipurpose machines that provide hoe, loading and elevating features), is investing 8 million euros in the construction of new installations at Reocín. Haulotte's main problem is finding suppliers, especially chassis suppliers, to build its personal elevating machines. The Government of Cantabria is co-operating in this mission.

Currently, the group purchases the materials it needs for the said machines in Eastern Europe, although its intention is to purchase them in Cantabria.
